When Ireland and I first began planning her and Jasen’s engagement session, she mentioned Carmel—a place with special meaning for them both.

As a California engagement photographer who loves traveling for unique sessions, I was excited! I dove into researching engagement photo session ideas at local beach spots. I sent her inspiration photos of couples on rugged cliffs, waves crashing, and sunsets glowing.

But Ireland wasn't into it. “I’m not really a beach picture kind of person,” she admitted.

Coastal, but not the coast? My mind glitched for a second. I love when clients bring their own vision. So, I pivoted.

Looking for Engagement Photo Session Ideas Outside the Box in Carmel Valley

I dove into researching other engagement session locations near Carmel that didn’t involve the coast. That’s how I found Garland Ranch, a quiet natural preserve tucked just 15 minutes inland from the beach.

The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District website calls it the "granddaddy" of their properties. Once owned by the Garland family, the MPRPD bought it from William Garland II in 1975. This was their first parkland acquisition.

It had everything we didn’t know we needed: woodsy trails, golden meadows, shaded ferns, and a sense of peaceful seclusion. Excitedly, I brought my findings to Ireland, and she agreed—this was the place.

Fast forward two months later, it's engagement session time. We started out on a wide path through a meadow. As our trail began to ascend, we walked under the shade of the sycamore trees, with ferns dotting both sides of the pathway.

At one point, Ireland looked around and smiled. “I love this. This is exactly what I wanted.”

That’s the goal every time.

Engagement Photos That Feel Like You

This session was a great reminder that your photos don’t have to look like anyone else’s. You don’t need grand scenery to capture something meaningful. You just need a place that feels like you.

Ireland and Jasen’s engagement session in Carmel Valley was peaceful, earthy, romantic, and a perfect reflection of their relationship.
